1. What is Stand Up Paddle Surfing  (or SUPing)?

It’s a mix of kayaking and surfing - like longboard/malibu surfing except you stand up and use a paddle to move around.

2. Why use a paddle?

It means you can get around to different parts of the break quicker, explore the coast line and is just another way of propelling yourself through the water.

3. Does it mean I can catch more waves?

For sure!

4. Is SUPing only suitable in waves?

No! Not at all. It’s a great flat water sport too and is really good for all round fitness.

5. Can I just use my Mal?

You will find your standard Mal too small for SUP. 9’6 to 11'  boards are recommended
6. What do I need to bring?
Hat, sunscreen, towel, sunglasses, change of clothing, bottle of water

7. What should I wear?

Just your cossies and a cap are fine! But if you’d rather cover up a bit more bike shorts, lycra/rash top. A wetsuit is good to wear on a cold day
8. Do I need to have experience?

No previous experience at either surfing or kayaking is required, however all participants must be competent swimmers and in reasonably fit condition. If you have any health concerns we recommend checking with your GP prior to participating

9. Do I need to book?

Yes please!
10. What happens if  it is raining?

SUPing still goes ahead in rain!

11. Why do surfers like SUPing?
Many surfers have converted because of the versatility offered by being able to move faster, see more and be in a more comfortable position. Stand up paddle boarding offers surfers the ability to catch more waves in a set, as well as offering a better view of incoming sets

12. What are SUP boards made of and how long are they?
Most are glass-reinforced plastic construction using epoxy resin that is compatible with the expanded polystyrene foam used in the core. The boards are generally longer than 9 feet (3 m), and up to 12 feet (4 m) or more in length, with features such as padded decks and concave hulls; they generally have one or three surfboard-style fins in the stern for tracking.
